Whether they were in L.A. or Oakland it didn't matter to me. I took pride in the fact that the Raiders were one of the most hated teams in the NFL but also one of the most loved. Even though they weren't always the best team around they were always a respectable team. That is until now. For those of you who don't know I was at the Raider's 2006 season opener against the Chargers on ESPN Monday Night Football. It was the first Raider game I have ever seen in real life. Sadly the Raiders suffered their first home shut out in 20+ years that night when they lost 27 - 0. I knew after that game that this season probably wouldn't be any better than last year or the year before that but I never dreamed that it would be worse. How can you not improve when you only win 4 games in the previous season? The loss to San Diego was followed by more losses. There was even talk of the Raiders being the first team to not win a game in an entire season. Then along came the hapless Cardinals who gave Oakland their first win of the year. The second win of the year was a fluke. Oakland returned two interceptions for touchdowns against the defending champion Steelers and won the game with less than 100 yards of offense. Then we come to Oakland's second Monday Night Football game of the year against the Seahawks. I think I can honestly say that I've never seen a team look as bad as the Raiders looked last night. They became the first team ever to be shutout twice on Monday Night Football in the same season.

I almost took an internship with the Raiders this season. When the opportunity was first presented I was really excited and thought that I would for sure apply for the position. After thinking about it for a while I decided that missing two semesters to take the internship was more than I wanted to give up so I ultimately didn't take it. Now after watching how the team has performed so far I am so glad I didn't take the internship. I don't think I would be able to sit back and watch what I am seeing from the team especially if I was there in Oakland and working for the Raiders.

In hopes that maybe someone who can make a difference will read what I write, here are my recommendations for the Raiders.

1. Fire Tom Walsh - The guy is obviously not running the offense in a way that can win games. They can't even score or gain yardage. Obviously the offense he is trying to run isn't working. Rather than adapt it to fit better with what the players can do he just keeps running the same schemes over and over.

2. Art Shell - I like Art; I think he has the potential to bring the Raiders back to respectability. The one thing that Art needs is to show some passion. Where is your love? The players need someone who will get in their faces and throw things when they make a mistake. Don't just stand there like a statue. At the beginning of the season the goal was to bring back the Raider mystic. That will never happen with a lifeless coach on the sideline. It is your team, light the fire!

3. Andrew Walters - Oakland passes on Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler because they believed that you were their quarterback of the future. At times you look like you could be a pretty good quarterback and then there are times when you look terrible. Your o-line has more wholes than a chain link fence so you've got to get the ball out quick. Drop back, make your first read, if its not there make the second read if its not there then get rid of that ball like it was a time bomb.

4. Player management - What was up with trading Gabriel to the Pats for a 6th round pick. He was a great receiver and you basically kicked him to the curb. That's not good for player moral. It shows with the way Porter and Moss are acting now. Why would anyone want to stay on a sinking ship? If people want out then let them out.

Here is to the hope that one day in the not to distant future Oakland will return to glory.

Oakland - Submarines & Sea Lions

Submarines

Here are a few pics I took while at Pier 39 and the Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. The first one is of me and my friend Erick with the USS Jeremiah O'Brien in the back ground. The second pic is of Alcatraz from the pier. When we got to San Fran it was really foggy but as the day got hotter the fog burned off. The fog rolling over Alcatraz Island was really cool looking. The third pic is Erick standing in the crew quarters on board the USS Pampanito. While at Pier 39 we took of tour of the Pampanito which is a WWII submarine. I had never been on a sub before so it was really cool to go inside. The sub had 36 bunks and around 75 enlisted crewmen. The officers had a little better living conditions. The crew only needed 36 bunks because one shift was always on duty. They would be at sea for months at a time. I know one thing, I could never be a submariner. The fourth pic is the outside of the Pampanito.

Sea Lions

We hadn't been at the pier for very long and we started to hear this terrible racket. We soon found out that it was a group of the world's dumbest animal, sea lions. They have some docks floating in the bay for the sea lions. There were quite a few of them on the docks making that stupid sea lion sound. I was so unimpressed by them I didn't even bother to take a picture. If you are some granola loving hippy and you think that we should do all we can to save our friends of the sea I want you to stop reading my blog. I don't want you here. I mean it get lost. OK now if you are still reading then take your right hand off the mouse, make as tight a fist as you can, and now punch yourself as hard as you can right in the eye and pretend it was from me. Back to sea lions. What are they good for? I've seen a lot of dumb animals but they all have some useful purpose except for sea lions. Cows are pretty dumb but they give us milk and hamburger and leather. Some dogs are pretty dumb but they bark at intruders and give us companionship. Again I ask what are sea lions good for? Making obnoxious noises.

410 & Oakland - Nevada

OK so if you have never been to Nevada and wonder what it is like see the above picture and then picture that for 410 miles. Nevada is full of absolutely nothing. As we were driving through on the way to Oakland I was surprised at how desolate and barren Nevada is but it didn't really bother me to bad because I was excited to get down to Cali and see the game. On the way back the vastness of Nevada's nothingness couldn't be ignored. Ever little podunk town we came to made us wonder what in the world was wrong with those people to make them want to live in hell. To be fair to any of you Nevadans that might be reading this your state probably has something cool to see besides casinos but it sure as heck isn't close to I-80. The only reason we even stopped in Nevada was to get fuel. On the way to Oakland we stopped in a place called Puckerbrush.

Ah Puckerbursh, for those of you who have made the trip across Nevada via I-80 and you don't recall Puckerbrush don't be alarmed. If you happened to blink or were doing more then 80 mph when you went through chances are you totally missed Puckerbrush. The tow supposedly has a population of 28 but I don't see how that is possible as the only thing in Puckerbrush is a truck stop. There isn't even a westbound on ramp in Puckerbrush you have to drive down a frontage road for a few miles to get back onto the interstate. As I was writing this blog I decided to Google Puckerbrush and see what comes up. I couldn't find it on a map or find a zip code for it but there were a couple mentions of the town on a few websites. This is from rockymountainroads.com

"Exits 149-151 (Mill City/Dun Glen/Unionville) provide access to the pseudo-town of Puckerbrush. Cruising by at 70+ mph, all you'd see is a large Burns Brothers truck stop. The frontage road (old U.S. 40) between Exits 149 and 151 has a sign indicating that this is a real town with 28 people. However, the State of Nevada does not recognize this "town" at all … it is just a ploy by Burns Brothers. But it is a nice place to stop and gamble! And with that, we are in Winnemucca."

For more Puckerbrush fun check out this link.

http://janestrip.blogspot.com/2005/10/how-i-got-lost-in-puckerbrush-nevada.html

Moving past Puckerbrush. I can see why people want to dump nuclear waste in Nevada. There is nothing there that would be harmed by tons and tons of nuclear waste. The drive across Nevada was so boring that my friends and I started to come up with new state motto's for Nevada. Here are a few of the better ones.
Nevada - we suck and we know it
Nevada - America's landfill
Nevada - Three feet from hell

410 & Oakland

Oakland

Ok so for those of you who don't know some friends and I recently made a road trip to the Bay Area. The purpose of the trip was to go to the Monday Night Football opener between the Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers. We are cheap and decided that driving would save us a lot of money. So Sunday morning we left SLC headed for Pleasonton. It was a pretty long drive but it really didn't seem that bad. We kicked it in Pleasonton Sunday night. Monday we drove to San Fran and went to Pier 39 and the Fisherman's Warf. It was really pretty cool. We took a tour on a submarine, went on a few ships and stuff like that. Then Monday afternoon we headed back to the hotel so we could ride the BART to the stadium. It was really cool to see all the people wearing their Raider gear. Our seats were awesome. We were on the third row behind the A's dugout. To bad the game totally sucked. Oakland got worked 27 - 0. It was the Raiders first home shutout since 1981 overall though it was well worth it and now I can say I've been there. Tuesday morning we cut out pretty early because I had already skipped class on Monday and Tuesday and had to be back in Rexburg by Wednesday. We finally rolled back into SLC at 8 Tuesday night and then after a very brief pitstop I got back in the car and drove back to Blackfoot. I finally got to my parents place at around midnight and stayed the night there then drove back to Rexburg the next morning. The drive down there wasn't to bad but the drive back seemed really really long. The first pic is of my friends JDee, Erick and me in our hotel room all decked out in Raider gear getting ready to leave for the big game. The second pic of JDee and me at the stadium before the game. The third pic is of me and my new friend Smithy. He doesn't say much. That is one thing I really liked about San Fran, there was pirate stuff every where. I should have gotten a few pirate shirts while I was there. The fourth pic is of me standing on the bridge of an old ship. I can't remember the name of it but is was really cool to walk around on the deck and in the holds and stuff.

Freedom

Ah yeah! I figured I should take this moment before I pass out from bleach fumes to enjoy this feeling of being essentially done with IBC. Granted I have my marketing final still and a huge paper to finish but the final should be cake and the paper is basically done. All that is left now is to finish cleaning the bathroom and then enjoy some time off. It is hard to believe that the summer is over. There were days when I thought that it would never end. Now it is over and I am only two semesters away from graduation. So now I sit here blogging away, trying to get some oxygen to my head and totally enjoying the moment.

Chopper

One thing I really look forward to is buying a motorcycle next summer. I can't even tell you how glad I am that we are nearly done. My whole time of going to BYU-Idaho I've always heard how great the summers are here. Well let me tell you they suck. I'm glad this is my last summer in school because I doubt I would want to stay for another one. Maybe this is part of making the transition back into the real world. As I grow to hate being in Rexburg I look more and more forward to graduating, finding a job and starting work again. I just hope I can find something that will utilize my degree and allow me to continue to learn and grow.

Man . . .er Computer Down

I guess this a lesson that I needed to learn the hard way. Last Thursday as I was surfing the net and rocking out to some mp3's my computer flashed the fatal blue screen error. At first I wasn't to worried but when windows didn't reload because files were missing I thought I might be in trouble. I'm not a computer genius but I did build this computer so I know a little bit. After trying a few basic things like repairing windows and stuff and still not being able to load windows I decided I should take it to someone who knew more than I did. To make a long story short my main hard drive partition which held windows and my docs got wiped out. Luckily I had my music and dvds in seperate partitions so those files remained intact. Anyway, I lost all my papers and projects that I have written over the past few years and I lost all my pictures from my digital camera and cool pics that I had found and saved while surfing the net over the years. So currently I am in the process of trying to reinstall all my programs and at least get everything working again. Hopefully I'll get it all done soon.

So my advice to any of you who may be reading this is be sure to backup any files that you think are important so that if you find yourself in a similar situation you will at least have most of your stuff.

Snowmobile Drag Races

This past Saturday I was able to watch my brother compete in the annual Blackfoot Snowmobile Water Drag Races. It's an event that is held each summer at a local lake in conjunction with Blackfoot Pride Days. This year my brother Travis decided he would race his sled in the event. He was pretty nervous heading into the first run of the day because he'd never tried it before and one little mistake and your snowmobile will be at the bottom of the lake. To make things even worse the class he thought he'd be competing in (600 Modified) wasn't a class option that day. So the race organizers bumped him up to the 700 Modified class which meant he'd be racing sleds with bigger engines and possibly more power. His first race of the day was pretty close. The racers start on the beach on one side of the lake. They have about 3 feet to build up enough speed to float the sled on the water. If you don't get right on the throttle you don't build up enough speed and you are swimming. Travis' snowmobile wasn't quite warmed up enough so when he hit the gas it kind of cut out. Luckily he got enough momentum to get his sled floating but it gave the other guy he was racing a chance to pull ahead. After traveling about 10 feet across the lake you could see Travis' sled come alive and he started closing the gap between him and the other guy. By the half way mark Travis was way out in front and ended up winning the race. In the second round Travis had a perfect start and was able to grab enough of a lead that his opponent couldn't catch him. He ended up taking first place in the 700 Mod class which was pretty exciting.

Cloud 9 Kite Co.

Well June is half over and I haven't blogged for a while so I figured I ought to do a little catching up. As part of the IBC we formed a company and are supposed to come up with a product, secure a supplier, create a marketing and business plan and ultimately turn a profit and then shut the business down at the end of the semester. We have decided to sell kites. Some of the kites were are carrying can be found at prismkites.com The dual line Jazz stunt kite is going to be the high end kite that we will keep in stock but we will also take special orders for other Prism Kites. Next Wednesday we present our business plan to the loan committee and if all goes well Cloud 9 Kite Co. will be off the ground and selling product by next Thursday. Oh also if anyone that reads this is interested in getting a kite we are currently taking pre-orders. Contact me for our full line of kites or visit prismkites.com to check out some high end stunt kites.

Summer School

Well, for those of you who don't know I decided to stay in Rexburg and take classes this summer so that I can hopefully graduate in April. During my 4 years here at BYU-I I've always heard how great the summers are here. The classes are supposed to be easier and there is supposed to be more stuff going on. I'm not sure what those people were thinking. The fact that I am making this post on a Saturday night should tell you something about summers in Rexburg. I am sure there are plenty of things going on tonight. In fact I did get invited to a party at the sand dunes but those parties are usually lame. I was also invited over to my F.H.E. sisters apartment to watch cheesy movies but that didn't sound like to much fun. So here I sit, blogging away.
School is really starting to pick up. The first week was a real struggle for me. I usually don't get stressed about school but for some reason when this semester started my stress level was about as high as it had ever been. I guess the realization that this is it for me at BYU-Idaho, I pass these classes and I graduate in business, I don't pass and I've basically wasted the last 4 years of my life. The first week of school was probably not the best time to start a new job either. This past week I've found myself in class everyday from 8-11, at work from 11:30-5 and doing homework until around 10. In the past two weeks I've lost about ten pounds because I am lucky to get in one meal a day.
Anyway, the stress level is at least to a manageable level now so that is a good thing. I no longer have drastic thoughts like changing majors or dropping out of school for this semester. I'm sure now that I'll be working less hours at work the social scene will start to pick up as well. So looking forward I'd have to say that it should be fairly smooth sailing from here on out. I hope

A sad day

I found out yesterday that a girl I dated right after my mission was murdered. The murder actually happened almost two years ago but I didn't find out about it until last night. I don't get a chance to watch the news much especially when I am at school but for some reason I decided to record it last night and watch it later. As I was getting ready for bed and watching the evening's news cast I was shocked to see the story about her unsolved murder. Even though I hadn't talked to her in years I was extremely sad to hear that she had been killed. She was such a nice and caring person I just can't even believe that someone would want to hurt her, let alone kill her. I've been thinking all last night and today about the times we had together. If I hadn't moved to Utah who knows what might have happened. If I had kept in better contact with her maybe somehow she wouldn't have been in the situation that led to her death. I realize that you can't keep up with everyone you ever know and that some people no matter how good of friends you might have been at one time will slip out of your life. It just makes me sad that such a great person would have their life cut short like that. I just hope that even though the murder is currently unsolved that someday some evidence will come forward to bring her killer to justice and provide some closure to Nori's family and friends.

Something Brand New

I figured it had been a while since I had blogged and some stuff has been weighing on me lately so I figured if I put it down here maybe it would help. I decided to stay in Rexburg this summer. I hasn't been what I thought it would be so far. Granted we haven't even been in school for a week yet but it is just so different from the other semesters I've had here. It been weird having all new roommates. I truly had some great roommates the past two semesters but now they are all gone. The new guys seem alright but they aren't nearly as lively or exciting or entertaining as my old roommates were. That's been a huge adjustment to deal with. This semester my classes are structured in a way that I've never experienced before. I'm taking 4 business classes (the business core) they are all rolled into one class that meets every day from 8 to 11. Everything we do is in teams. I don't mind working in teams but so much would prefer to work by myself for most of the time. So that's another thing I'm trying to adjust to.

Mud Football

This is a pic from a couple years ago. I thought it was pretty good. I wouldn't put it up there with the original Ice Age though because it is basically the same jokes and humor. If you are a fan of Scrat then you will probably like the movie as he has a more prominent role in this movie. In fact I would say that the biggest laughs from the audience were Scrat's scenes. Overall I would give it 3.5 stars out of 5.

Recommendation of the week

16 Blocks

Went and saw 16 Blocks yesterday. I was surprised at how good it was. The movie stars Bruce Willis as JackMosley, an over the hill NYC cop who is given an assignement to take a prisoner (Eddie Bunker played by Mos Def) 16 blocks from the police station to the courthouse so he can testify before a grand jury. The trouble is that Eddie is supposed to testify against some cops and they don't want him to make it. When Mosley turns on his former partner to protect the life of Eddie he too finds himself on the run. The movie is rate PG-13 for violence and language.

Here Jack and Eddie hit the street after Jack shot a cop to keep him from killing Eddie

Worth the hassle

So my roommates and I usually go around and visit friends on Sunday after church. Last semester we started visiting a new apartment on the east side of campus. There girls there seemed pretty cool and it was a highlight of the week to visit them. As the weekly visits continued I started to have a little interest in one girl in particular. It wasn't anything serious she just seemed like a fun person and I wanted to get to know her better.

So finally we were able to get together and go do something. It was pretty fun but I wasn't getting much of a vibe from her. I found out from her roommate that she was being distant because she didn't want me to get the wrong idea.

Ok, thanks for thinking of me. I mean I was pretty sure after our one date we'd fall madly in love and be engaged that day. Oh wait, I asked you out simply because I thought you were cool and wanted to get to know you better. Now I'm thinking I made a serious error in judgement. I don't understand why here in Rexburg two people of the opposite sex can't be friends. It must be because of that blasted thing called eternal prospective (aka tunnel vision).

The thing that makes me mad is that now when I run into her on campus I feel weird because I don't want her to think that I'm looking for more than I really am. Why should I feel awkward because she can't handle a friendship.

I'm almost to the point that I'd say it's not worth the hassle.

Mugsy

Here's to you Mugsy.

Ode To Mugsy

Sadly today Mugsy died. I had noticed he hadn't been his usual self the past couple days and I knew something was wrong today when Jack would nip at him and he didn't even try to swim away. I was really pretty sad to lose him because he was tied with Jr. for my favorite. So I went to Wal-mart and got a new fish today. It is a white African Chiclid and I am naming him Locke. Hopefully Locke will be able to hold his own against Howl and Jack. They seem to be the ones giving him the most trouble so far. I think once they get used to each other it will be ok though. I'll post a picture of what Mugsy looked like as a tribute.

Back again

So I've posted quite a few pics but haven't really written anything for a while. It is hard to believe the semester is half over already. How does the time go by so fast? It is sad but I really don't look forward to the summers. I was hoping to stay in Rexburg and go to school this summer. I'm not sure if it will happen, just depends on what kind of job I can get for the summer and if I can come up with the money for tuition.

Things are going good though. My classes this semester are pretty good. We finally have gotten into designing in my Advertising class. I made a pretty sweet ad just messing around here at the apartment we'll see if the teacher and rest of the class think it is good. It is nice to be designing again though.

I got a couple fish at the beginning of the semester. I started out with a 10 gallon tank and two fish, a tiger oscar I named Howl because he is black and has orange spots and a blood parrot I named Beak because it looks like it has a beak. A few weeks later I was at Wal-mart and saw a fish that was pretty cool. It is called a Red Belly Pacus, it is a cousin to the piranha but not nearly as mean. So I ended up getting one and naming it Jaws.

Howl and Jaws are really growing fast. Each one is probably 5 inches long now. I sold my 10 g. to my roommate because he wanted to get some fish and I needed a bigger tank. So now I have a 30 g tank. I also got another oscar that I'm calling Howl Jr. for now but I'm trying to come up with a better name. I also got a convict chiclid that I named Mugsy and a Jack Dempsy that I named Jack.

It's been fun to have fish, it's also really relaxing to look over and see them swimming around and to hear the water falling out of the filter. Maybe one of these days I'll take some pics of my fish and post them.

<img style="DISPLAY: block; I'll be heading home tomorrow and won't have access to the internet until I come back to school so this will be my last post of 2005. It is hard to believe that another year has gone by. Tonight is graduation, my sister and her husband are graduating and then headed to Oregon after the new year. It will be weird to be up here without them around.

Well, not much else to say so I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

A business spin on sacrifice

This past Sunday in Elders Quorum we were talking about making sacrifices and that sort of thing. All my business classes must be starting to wear off on me because as we were talking I started to think of sacrifice in a way that I never had before. In business when you give up something in hopes of getting something more in return it is called an investment. Making a sacrifice to the Lord is the same thing. We give up things in hopes that we will get something better in return such as blessings and eternal life. So rather than look at what we are giving up we should look at what we can gain. After hours and hours in the design lab and typing away on the computer I was able to finish my last two homework assignments of the semester. It was such a relief Saturday night as I was putting the finishing touches on my business plan to finally have it done. Overall this semester has gone quite well. As long as I don't totally bomb my finals I will be in good shape. Sadly there was one casualty along the way, my stats grade has suffered insomuch that I'll be retaking it next semester. I'm glad to have another semester under my belt. Hopefully one of these days I will be able to graduate and get out of Rexburg.

Three Week Sprint

I can't even tell you how nice it was to have nearly a full week off from school for the Thanksgiving break. It was such a relief to not have to worry about going to class or working on assignments, although I should have done a few assignments over the break. Today was the first day back in class. We have two full weeks of class left and then a week of finals. It puts a smile on my face every time I look at the calander and see that December is just days away. We get a longer break between semesters this year (almost three weeks). Most of my classes are winding down a bit. Overall this semester has been suprisingly succesful. The only class I am even remotlely worried about is Stats. I have to pass the class with a C- to get into the business program next semester. So that will be my main focus over the next few weeks.

Pics

I thought I had better write a quick post and explain why I posted those two pictures without any sort of comment or explanation. My hatered of the Bills goes back to the days when they lost four super bowls in a row. I'm sure I will always hate them also, right along with the Patriots, Chiefs, and Broncos.
I've got to give props to Norv for finally letting Lamont do some running. They are paying the guy enough money he might as well earn it with some touches. I've pretty much given up hope that Oakland will make the playoffs this year so now I am just rooting for them to knock as many teams out of contention as possible. Hopefully they can pick up against the Titans where they left off against the Bills.

Roundabout

Over the summer the city replaced one of the most screwed up intersections in the world with a roundabout. The old intersection was a three way stop with four roads coming into it. East bound traffic didn't have to stop but all other directions did. To make it even worse the traffic coming in from the West had a left turn only lane and a lane for going straight and turning right. The problem was when people would be in the turn lane but blow staight through the intersection. I have seen many wrecks and pedestrians hit by cars at that intersection.

So now we have a roundabout. I think it was a great idea to put it in because it helps traffic move through more freely. The only problem is a lot of the people here have no idea how to drive through a roundabout. Last night I was headed up to campus but the car in front of me stopped at the roundabout. There were a few cars coming but they were on the inside lane, leaving the outside lane free and clear. At first I thought that prehaps the driver of the car was planing on heading West (out of town) but no, she proceeded to turn right after a few minutes. What a moron! If you don't know how to drive through a roundabout, Learn! If you can't find a way to get the information then you probably shouldn't be driving.

I've enclosed a link to Rexburg's Rules For Roundabout Safety for all those people out there that need it.

http://www.rexburg.org/index.asp?Type=SEC&SEC={72692B93-7687-4105-A416-679166ABE17D}&DE={F371BE3E-94E7-44F0-B22B-14F1AEF83891}

November 1st

What more can be said?

Raider Fan

Here are a few pictures I took the other day. Last night I watched the Raiders self destruct at the hands of New England. What the heck is up with Norv Turner? The guy has been coaching in the NFL for a long time but after watching the play calling in last night's game I think we could train a chimp to do a better job than he did. I mean sure, we've got Randy Moss now but you can't throw it deep to Randy on every play. Especially not when he is being double and triple teamed. If there are three guys on Moss then someone else must be open. Try throwing it to him.

What is the deal with all those penalties? I think it was something like 13 penalties for 130 some yards. That is ridiculous. When I played football in high school if we would have gotten that many penalties and played such a sloppy game we would have had hell to pay at the next practice. These guys are supposed to be professional athletes, in any other job if you keep repeating mistakes like that you get fired. Norv please, for the sake of the Raider Nation, start kicking some ass at practice.

In the beginning

As I've surfed the net I've come to the realization that nearly every shmuck out there has a blog where they can rant and rave and pour out a bunch of mindless drivel that no one really cares about.
